DelFest 2026 Review: Cold, Rain and Mud Doesn’t Stop the Party!

The 18th annual DelFest Music Festival took place at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, MD, May 21-25, 2026.  The hosts Del McCoury and the Travelin’ McCourys were joined by Alison Krauss & Union Station, Blackberry Smoke, Toy Factory Project, Leftover Salmon, Infamous Stringdusters, Siera Ferrell and many more!

DelFest has always been a festival that is synonymous with weather events. Mother Nature always seems to have some alternative plans for the Cumberland, Maryland hills come Memorial Day weekend, and this year was no different. Part of the DelFest experience is enjoying the blistering heat, and sunshine, while floating down the Potomac River or sitting in the field listening to music. But another part of the experience is dealing with unpredictable weather events, like hail or a Del-nado.

For DelFest 2026, the plans were a little different as the week started with some extreme heat for those who attended DelFest Academy, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for aspiring musicians to hang and jam with the McCoury family as well as some of the leading bluegrass and country musicians who are playing DelFest that year. However, once the heat broke, the rain clouds started moving in, and the temperature started to drop. For those who showed up on Thursday, the rain continued to fall, and did so pretty much until Sunday morning, where attendees were lucky enough to see a break in the weather, while enjoying the stellar Sunday lineup.

DelFest 2026 was a sea of rain gear as people thrived and survived, dealing with the elements in the best possible way.

As DelFesters sloshed through the mud, this year really brought the best out of people as neighbors were helping neighbors, and everyone was trying to survive the rain and mud together.

While Mother Nature did not cooperate, that did not stop people from having one of the best weekends of their life. In fact, there was even a wedding out on the baseball fields, an experience that the happy couple will never forget!

DelFest 2026 Highlights

The Crowd:

While this year may not have been the most crowded of all the DelFest’s, those folks who showed up, brought their all and endless energy. This year’s lineup was one of the better of the past years and the fans who weathered the rain showed up and gave it their all.

In typical festival fashion, friend groups still rocked their fabulous outfits, while still staying dry. Whether it was kids dressed as dragons, or matching gold track suits, the crowd at DelFest knows how to weather any storm and still have fun while doing it!

The Music:

If you’ve been to DelFest then you know that every set is some of the best music you’ll see from the artist you’re seeing, so, it’s more important to highlight the unique and diverse lineup that DelFest is able to deliver year in and year out.

While bluegrass and Americana are the mainstay genres, fans were treated to almost every genre of music throughout the weekend, whether it was the melodic jazz and funk from The Broomestix (where they also played a ripping cover of Ween’s Voodoo Lady), the soaring southern rock from Toy Factory Project, the funky chops from Southern Avenue, or the Irish-Dance Party from Gaelic Storm, there is a little bit of something for everyone at DelFest.

I also need to mention Sam Bush sitting in for two songs during Del’s soundcheck, Sierra Ferrell not leaving a tear dry with her rendition of This Land is Your Land, and the absolute transcendent version of the Imperial March by The Punch Brothers. Let us not forget The Young Guns, a group of kids that Del and his family found and gave the opportunity to showcase two songs on the Grandstand in between sets.

The McCoury Family

If you’ve never been to DelFest, do yourself a HUGE favor, and go.

Even if it’s just for a day, it’s definitely worth it to just see the magic that the McCoury family has been able to create over the past 17 DelFests. In fact, Wes Moore, Governor of Maryland, declared May 22nd Del McCoury Day, so if that’s not an indication of the contributions Del and his family have made to not only bluegrass, but also to Cumberland, Maryland and the surrounding area, then I don’t know what is.

The McCoury family continues to grow, but their contributions will never be forgotten. For folks at the festival, it’s an amazing chance to experience the journey of this incredible family, whether it’s the three Del McCoury sets you’re treated to, the Travelin’ McCoury’s headlining set, or any of the countless sit-ins that happen during almost every artist’s set, you’ll get wowed by some of the most raw musical talent that runs throughout the entire family. It’s amazing getting to see the children of Rob and Ronnie sitting in with not only Del and the family, but also by request with other artists like Sam Grisman and Shadowgrass.

DelFest 2026 Final Verdict

Weather is unpredictable, but that will never stop DelFesters from making their annual pilgrimage to the shores of the Potomac.

Just like DelFest past, this one was another one for the record books.

The weekend was filled with absolutely incredible picking (I’m looking at you, Sierra Hull, Magoo, Sister Sadie, Marty Stuart, and the many others), the most civilized and well-behaved crowds you’ll ever experience, and the most family-friendly festival environment you’ll ever experience.

Shoutout to the KidZone and the amazing folks who organize and run that year-in and year-out. What a surreal experience it is to see the kids having the time of their lives and then getting their time in the spotlight with the Kids’ Parade (a yearly extravaganza).

If you’ve ever thought about making the trip to DelFest, then let me tell you, stop thinking about it, and just DO IT! Not only is May 22nd Del McCoury Day, but DelFest struck a deal with the county to host another 5 DelFests. You heard that right! 5 more years of Del and the McCourys bringing some of the best bluegrass music (dare I say music) to Allegany County.

So, pack your bag now, make sure to pack for all seasons, and make sure to come with an open mind because by the time you leave, your cheeks will hurt from smiling, your stomach will be full of good food and libations, and your mind will be full of the most precious memories that you will cherish for the rest of your life.
