5 Reasons to Attend the Mental Awakening Festival

Words and Images by Jason Robey – Wicked Garden Media

Mental Awakening is an annual Atlanta-based music festival organized by Crawfish for a Cause. Focused on raising funds for local, low-overhead nonprofits with (mostly) local artists, the event has grown from a backyard setting with two bands in 2021 into a multi-day festival with double-digit bands and several thousand attendees.  The 2026 Mental Awakening Festival took place March 27-28 and included headliners Big Something, Dogs in a Pile and Dizgo.

1. Music for a Cause

First and foremost, the festival is a charity event. Mental Awakening is put on by Crawfish for a Cause, raising money for local and regional mental health organizations. The annual festival began in 2021, as a small event featuring two bands in a back yard. In the five years since, it has grown to a two day festival presenting more than a dozen bands. Crawfish for a Cause was founded in 2019 and has since donated over $80,000 to local mental health organizations (before calculating the 2026 festival proceeds). For the past three years, the festival has been held at Westside Motor Lounge, a spacious restaurant, bar, and event space with two outdoor stages and plenty of seating.

2. The Lineup

Mental Awakening features impressive band lineups. As the festival has grown, the caliber of acts has grown with it. They have struck a balance of nationally-known touring acts, such as this year’s Dogs In a Pile, Dizgo, and Big Something with regional up-and-comers like Underground Springhouse, Frute, and Ain’t Sisters. Past years have seen other well-known names such as Eggy, Spafford, and Shadowgrass.

3.  The Cost

Not only does the money you spend help out a great cause, but Mental Awakening is very affordable. A two-day ticket to this year’s festival was only $67. Compared to other fests or even single concerts, that’s really inexpensive. The one caveat is that it is not a camping festival, so if you don’t live in the area, you’ll need to find a place to stay. That isn’t difficult, however, as the venue is only a mile from downtown Atlanta, where there are lots of hotel options, as well as surrounding towns with cheaper motels. Food and drinks are also much more affordable than many festivals and venues, with beer ranging from $5-$8, and a variety of meal options ranging from $10-20. The festival’s signature meal is the crawfish boil, which includes a generous helping of crawfish with corn and potatoes for only $16.

4.  The People

The people at Mental Awakening create a safe, comfortable, and welcoming culture. Festival organizers and staff are volunteers with the guest experience as their top priority. Everybody I came in contact with was friendly, smiling, and genuinely happy to be there. It was easy to see how much work everyone put into making the festival run smoothly, which, in turn, creates an environment where attendees can have fun, let loose, and feel like they’re among friends from the moment they walk through the gate.

5. The jams!

Two stages in close proximity allowed a staggered schedule that kept the downtime to zero. This year’s festival kicked off at 4:45 Friday afternoon with Atlanta’s Yule, followed by Tuscaloosa, AL band Wax Monkey, each providing their own flavor of breezy, psychedelic rock. Tand brought the energy up a level with their set, featuring their song “Swim” going into an extended  and extra funky version of the Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It To the Streets,” before closing with a ferocious run through of their fan favorite “Fat Tua.” Frute, another Atlanta band who have been making their way on the festival scene, brought a soulful tint to the evening, with a danceable sound and a trippy liquid light show by North Carolina visual artist Splat Daddy. Friday night closed with a two-hour set from Dogs In a Pile. Their face-melting 20 minute version of “Craig and Pat” was easily one of the highlights of the weekend.

Saturday at Mental Awakening blasted off with a pair of Atlanta bands; Copacetic with a heavier edge and Ain’t Sisters and their fun alternative rock style. Nashville jamgrass band Airshow made their third appearance at Mental Awakening, providing a trippy, effect-laden take on traditional bluegrass. Athens group Underground Springhouse hit the stage for their second time at the festival, bringing a reggae-tinted southern rock to the jam rock sound. The band has been rising through the ranks of the scene for the past few years, drawing the attention of the crowd, ready to dance to their set. Mama’s Love followed up on the second stage with a fun classic Americana sound, blended with progressive rock and improv.

As the sun began to set, the heavy hitters for the evening took over. North Carolina’s BIG Something hit the stage running with a monster jam of “Megaladon” transitioning seamlessly into Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean” and moving just as easily back to finish the former. Later in their set, they invited String Cheese Incident percussionist Jason Hann to the stage for an unforgettable “Algorithm > Love Generator” segment.

Closing the second stage for the weekend, Denver band Sqwerv showed the crowd why they’ve been accumulating a following of hardcore fans over the recent months. From the opening notes of “Psychic Warfare,” the psychedelic indie rock four-piece wowed the audience with their penchant for transcendental jams and catchy hooks. The biggest surprise in their set was a cover of Billy Strings’ bluegrass tune “Meet Me at the Creek,” played in their own style, without losing a bit of the original song’s heart.

Touring juggernaut and festival staple of late, Dizgo, closed out the main stage, opening with “Grand Ol’ Time,” which made a promise to the crowd that they would more than follow through on. A nearly 20-minute “Run” kept the crowd in a state of mesmerized and unbridled movement, before exploding into a high-energy cover of Phish’s “Axilla (Pt II).” Jason Hann made another stage appearance for the second half of Dizgo’s set, bringing a new level of energy to the already blazing show. A 15-minute performance of their new song “Tourmaline,” featuring a few minutes of jamming on String Cheese Incident’s “Rosie” was undoubtedly a highlight of the day, moving smoothly through sultry, soulful passages to all-out balls to the wall rock sections. The group provided the perfect end to a weekend of pure musical bliss, with one last chance for the night owls in the crowd. A late night party inside the venue featuring Jason Hann’s DJ project, League of Sound Disciples, with thumping bass and colorful visuals.
