VIDEO PREMIERE: “Deep Ellum Blues” by Mark Joseph ft. Melvin Seals
Mark Joseph has just released his fourth studio album, “Palisade Peach.” For “Palisade Peach”, the soulful Amercian singer/songwriter/guitar shredder employed plenty of well-known pros and friends to chip in, including producer and slide guitar sensei Steve McCormick.
The album is a wonderful journey through originals and classics, with special guests popping up around every corner, complimenting Joseph’s soulful vocal textures and brilliantly rich guitar tone.
One well-known guest is Melvin Seals, the iconic Jerry Garcia Band organist. Seals lends his keys to the classic “Deep Ellum Blues,” along with Stanley “The Baron” Behrens on harp.
Joseph delivers “Deep Ellum” in a way that is certainly recognizable as the well-known song, but definitely becomes something new that feels like a Mark Joseph tune, well at home along with this album and the rest of his catalog.
Of “Deep Ellum Blues”, Joseph says, “This classic song has been around for well over 100 years and still resonates today. My take here is funky and danceable while heeding the warnings of the old days of Deep Ellum.”

“Deep Ellum Blues” is an iconic American blues song that’s over 100 years old. Mark Joseph has brought this version to life with an allstar cast of world class musicians including very special guest Melvin Seals from The Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin even plays his JGB (Jerry Garcia Band) original organ on the track that was only recently brought out of storage and refurbished for the first time since Jerry passed away. This version travels from San Fran to LA and all the way back down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
The almost swamp groove feel is brought to life by the LA rhythm section duo of Tony Austin (Kamasi Washington / Solomon Burke) on drums & Tom Freund (Ben Harper) on bass. Stanley “The Baron” Behrens (WAR / Canned Heat) rips on the harp and Producer Steve McCormick with the smooth slide and rhythm guitar blending throughout. The southern gospel overtones also called for and received Ryan Balthrop (Slide Bayou) on backing vocals. He brings that Mobile (aka Mobtown) true bayou gulf sound that I love so much. That topped with Heather Donavon, Jill Mikelson, Alex Steele and Steph Devine bring the “American Soul” choir to life and warn of the troubles that await an eager young man in Deep Ellum.
