New York Guitar Festival Goes Virtual
New York Guitar Festival Will Host Online Series in Honor of Reverend Gary Davis
Article by Christopher Snyder
For twenty-one years, The New York Guitar Festival has brought joy to enthusiasts in The Big Apple. Every genre imaginable is showcased during the time period. Due to the events that are happening with the current global pandemic, the festival will be brought to you via social media this year.
This year’s title, “Reverend Gary Davis: In Search Of The Harlem Street Singer”, features the music of the blind blues and gospel artist who was one of the most sought out teachers of the guitar because of his very intriguing way of fingerpicking. Some of the students who taught include Bob Weir, David Bromberg, Larry Campbell, and Rory Block.
During his lengthy career that spanned over four decades (1930s-1970s), Rev. Davis was known not only for his guitar style but also skills with the banjo and harmonica. It is fitting to pay homage to someone who paved the way for some of the household name musicians we know today.
Each day The New York Guitar Festival will launch at 4 PM via their YouTube Channel and will feature some of the best guitar players from around the globe.
The daily schedule of performances is as follows:
Sonia de los Santos (May 9th)
Jorma Kaukonen (May 10th)
Kaia Kater (May 11th)
Brandon Ross (May 12th)
Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams (May 13th)
Warren Haynes (May 14th)
Larkin Poe (May 15th)
