The Drunken Hearts release “Wheels of the City”
The Drunken Hearts Release Wheels of the City, October 18, 2019 on LoHi Records
Fresh off the heels of their 2018 release, The Prize, Colorado’s The Drunken Hearts are right back at it with their newest offering, Wheels of the City.
Recorded at Silo Sound Studios in Denver and produced by the iconic Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth, Wheels of the City is a strong follow up to The Prize, highlighting the range and growth of The Drunken Hearts.
Wheels is marked by singer/guitarist Andrew McConathy‘s distinct vocals and thoughtful, haunting lyrics, while also showcasing the talents of each member of the band. Guitarist Kory Montgomery continues to make waves as one of the best rock guitarists on the scene. Along with Cody Russell on pedal steel, lap steel, and dobro, Wheels of the City is full of memorable licks and melodies that create several instant classics. With a driving rhythm section composed of Jon McCartan on bass and Alex Johnson on drums, The Drunken Hearts continue to deliver songs that easily transfer to the stage, making a Hearts show a high-energy affair akin to any great rock show.
In our review of The Dunken Hearts’ previous effort, The Prize, we noted that the Hearts were transcending labels and genres, and creating a unique sound of their own. Now, with Wheels, that sound is further solidified. Add in the magic touch of Tim Carbone, and Wheels of the City becomes more than a unique effort outside of traditional labels. It is a journey.
“I loved working on this record with The Drunken Hearts,” exclaims Tim Carbone, a partner in LoHi Records. “We did a song a day and except for some vocal overdubs, solo replacements and the strings and horns, that was how it all went down. I’d never worked that way before. It was an amazing stretch of hyper-creativity. I’m very proud of Wheels of the City!”

On Wheels of the City there is a distinct feel of rock and Americana, but something more, as McConathy and The Drunken Hearts manage to capture the feeling of now.
In a landscape of bluegrass, country, Americana, and jamgrass, The Drunken Hearts offer a refreshing alternative. Wheels of the City is like having a fine cheese as a palette cleanser during a wine tasting, only to realize that the cheese was more intersting than the wine!
